A healthy work-life balance has become increasingly important for employees in the modern workplace. With technologies allowing many employees to work remotely, and the lines between professional and personal lives blurring, achieving a satisfactory equilibrium between work and life has presented new challenges. Maintaining good mental health and wellbeing amidst the demands of work is vital, and it is something all employees need to address.

Reduce Stress and Burnout

Excessive work demands and pressures can lead to heightened stress, eventual burnout and ill health if not managed properly – 30% of adults say they feel stressed more than 10 days in a month. 

While some overtime may be unavoidable during busy periods, consistently overworking and not taking adequate time for non-work activities is detrimental long-term. Setting realistic workloads, taking regular breaks, utilising holidays, and adopting good relaxation techniques helps alleviate stress. 

Use an interactive annual leave calendar to track whether employees are using their allotted leave entitlement. Remind them if they fail to do so. 

A healthy work-life balance means not being overburdened mentally and physically by work.

When rested and recharged from quality downtime away from work, employees can be more energised, focused and productive at work. With chronic stress absent from overworking, concentration levels and work satisfaction tend to rise. A refreshed mind after proper leisure and relaxation boosts motivation. Employers benefit from higher staff performance. Employees should avoid spending long hours at the office when not absolutely necessary. 

Promote Better Health and Wellbeing

Leading a well-balanced lifestyle with enough time allocated to looking after oneself physically and mentally outside of work has huge health benefits. People who divide time sensibly between work and leisure tend to suffer less from anxiety, depression and chronic disease. Activities that provide relaxation and enjoyment such as exercise, hobbies and socialising are important. Getting adequate, quality sleep is also essential. Making health and wellbeing a priority and not letting work dominate helps prevent burnout.

Improve Personal Relationships

The pressures of a heavy, draining workload along with extended working hours often negatively impact personal relationships with partners, children, family and friends. Quality time together may be neglected. A healthier equilibrium between professional and personal responsibilities allows people to devote more time to nurturing meaningful relationships and avoiding relationship breakdowns or social isolation. Reasonable work hours and breaks make maintaining a strong support network easier.

Promote Better Work-Life Integration

Rather than demanding a firm separation between work and personal life, which is difficult for many modern professionals, the aim should be better integration between the two. 

Greater schedule flexibility, scope to occasionally work from home, and avoidance of strict 9-5 hours coupled with excessive presenteeism, allows people to achieve smoother integration. For instance, spending time with loved ones, exercising or pursuing a hobby during weekdays can be permitted where feasible. Work and home life should complement, not conflict.

Actively striving to attain a healthy work-life balance where work demands do not overwhelmingly dominate personal life is vital for mental, physical and social wellbeing. People perform best when allowed time to regularly unwind, de-stress and focus on activities beyond work. Employers and employees alike should recognise the multi-faceted benefits of a balanced lifestyle.
