It is hugely important to look after your mental and physical wellbeing. Whether through a balanced diet or reduced screen time, there are several factors that contribute to the bigger picture.

You may be surprised to learn that even the smallest changes to your habits can make a world of difference. Here are some factors you can consider when it comes to improving your mental and physical wellbeing.

Why is mental and physical wellbeing so important?

Mental and physical wellbeing can be tackled unanimously as well as individually. For example, exercise has proven benefits for both your physical and mental wellbeing – and so does eating a nutritious and balanced diet.

However, sometimes, you may want to place your focus on one area in particular. Looking after your mental wellbeing for example might look like an afternoon without going on your phone, arranging a meet-up with a friend or booking an appointment with a therapist. Everyone is on their own journey and will be dealing with a wide spectrum of issues.

Meanwhile, attention to your physical wellbeing could look like going for a long walk, doing some stretches to improve your mobility or doing high-intensity exercise at the gym.

The importance of self-care

Self-care ties in with both physical and mental wellbeing. If you take the time to make yourself look good, the likelihood is that you’ll feel good too. Something as simple as washing your hair can make an instant impact on your mood.

For someone else, self-care could involve dealing with their insecurities, perhaps by taking their time to put on make-up or adding hair thickening spray to boost their confidence. Others might focus on exercise to boost their endorphins and self-esteem. The ways in which you can tap into self-care are endless.

The link between mental and physical health

As mentioned previously, the link between mental and physical health is undeniable – the two bounce off each other.

Someone might take great comfort in spending time with friends on a hike together, as it not only gets those endorphins pumping but can also open up valuable social time by prompting more meaningful chats with one another.

Focusing on mental health

Our mental health journeys are very individual. What might work for one person may not be necessary for another – and that’s ok.

Generally, the NHS recommends that you:

Connect with others – Having social events in your calendars, or even a phone call, is important to give you something to look forward to and savour quality time with others.

Stay physically active – Depending on your capabilities, this will improve your overall fitness, balance and muscle strength.

Learn new skills – This will help to build your confidence and keep your brain stimulated.

Give to others – Helping others will help give you a feeling of self-worth.

Practice mindfulness – Being present and in the moment can help you practice gratitude and be thankful for what you have.
